Like
most car buffs, I’ve previously owned a Lancer box type and Honda Civic. My
fascination with convertibles started when I was on my way to a golf game and
saw a group of sports cars ( Slks, z3s , tt ) having their fun run. Since then,
I kept on wondering how it feels like to drive such vehicles. Not until I came
across a Miata, which doesn’t have to cost me an arm and a leg to actually
fulfill my dream. Besides, Miata has been considered as the benchmark in design
of convertibles. Even back then in ‘99, hunting for a good conditioned Miata was
harder than I thought. It took me half a year to spot THE one and I just had to
decide the very next day.

First stop was the shop in Ortigas, where I saw a sign Miata accessories. Turns
out it was owned by Allan, my former bike mate and also the one who introduced
me to the club. Festival of Speed ‘99 was the first time I met the club members.
And I was so glad to meet such people who share the same passion with me. This
passion led me to do some research on how to make an already good handling miata
to become that dream ride. Hence, the installation of turbo charger, mazda speed
suspension, Center force clutch etc…. surely making
every
drive feel like a fun run. And, of course, fun runs won’t be half as fun without
the company of the members of miata club. As what my wife mentioned, these
gatherings have made us grown men feel like kids again.
Now that I am based here in Vancouver, I’ve returned the engine and drive train
back to its stock configuration. It’s really hard to let go of my miata…..or
maybe it’s the happy memories that are attached to it. Now it’s time to move on
…… maybe to a 3rd gen miata?
