*** MX-5 Miata Of the Month ***

Reggie with his toy car

Congratulations to Reginald Mendiola on the selection of his Miata as the MCP's Miata of the Month for August/September 2008.

My toy car, something I could call mine alone..

Way back in ‘03, the thought of nearly getting one was so close that I let it slip away. Now, I regret that. Instead, I got myself a 1986 Mini Mayfair (Mini Cooper for most people), which for the past five years have given me fun and excitement as well, but more headaches and tensions of anticipating breakdowns. Though it’s a fun car, being a European car, there’s also has a lot of downside to it. Prices of p arts are exorbitant and ordering through the net with all that waiting could kill you.

Until I said to myself, enough of this! I’m growing old and needed a fun drive but also something reliable. Though I’ve only gotten the car a month ago from a dealer in Ortigas, I’ve learned that it’s a very reliable car, with an added bonus: parts are readily available. For P450k at 40k km, it was a steal, as I was told.

My Miata, as I found out from Joey Bernardez, was formerly owned by Jerry Jiao. I saw a picture of it in one of the archived galleries in the Miata Club’s website. Thanks to Jerry for sharing his good fortune to someone who’s been dreaming of owning one for the longest time.

I like the shape, the balance and the responsiveness of the car. Mine is stock except for the sound system, a Nardi steering wheel and shift knob ( I still have the original Momo); mud guards and cup holder and some after market practicalities like a remote alarm and door locks plus the solenoid trunk opener.

For now, I intend to keep it that way, until probably I get feverish with the Miata bug and start modifying it to give it it’s own character and personality

I guess most guys would agree, personalizing your Miata is your way of expressing yourself through your car, your toy.

This could be the last toy car I would have, a Miata, and I love it!

Thanks to the nice people of MCP for the warm welcome, more power to you!

Reginald Mendiola
