ME AND MY MIATA
I
had not thought of buying a Miata. But Rey Reyes said he was selling one and
would I like to take a look. So I looked. I took it for a spin. And I was
hooked.
My first roadster ride was on my father’s MGA. He imported sixteen of them and
kept one for himself. I was a bus rider in prep and one afternoon, pop decided
to pick me up from school in his silver roadster. And as we passed six buses at
a time along Katipunan road, top down and all, I remember hearing a kid
exclaiming “Wow, Ferrari!” How can I forget that day. That was around Christmas
in ’58.
To be honest, I didn’t think much of the Miata when I saw the first one at a
local auto show. It was BRG and was all black inside. I guess the local Mazda
dealers did not do a good job of selling these babies because eventually, they
offered them as a bonus if you bought one of their MPVs. Imagine that.
But
it seems Honda was paying attention to the numbers of Miatas that were being
snapped up elsewhere around the world and when I read about their S2000, I
decided that I should have one. That is, until I heard how much the grey market
importers were asking for these cars.
So when Rey told me that I could have this red roadster with less than 10K on
the clock for about a fifth of the asking price of an S2000, I could not write a
check fast enough. And I haven’t stopped grinning yet.
Rey was president of the Miata Club Philippines and he invited me to join. I did
not take him up on his invitation until his last month as president. Why did I
wait so long?
What
kind of guy (or gal) buys a Miata? Apparently, my kind of people Because I have
enjoyed the company of Miata guys for more than five years now. Dicing with the
racers, stuffing myself silly with the food group, betting with the golfers,
snapping away with the shutterbugs, ogling the, er, cars at car shows, fun runs,
weekend road trips, motorcades, Friday nights, beer, mashers…………..
And what do I like to do with my Miata? I like to drive it. I like to drive it
fast. I like to drive it very fast. With the top down of course
Would I recommend it to a friend? Is that a trick question?
