Owning a Miata was the furthest thing from my mind. I was just having my 200SX
tuned by Ramon Villacorta but he kept on bugging me about buying one. I kept on
replying that it was “too small” and that the convertible would only give me
lung cancer (take note my smoking will not). My protests lasted until he let me
drive his car down the Skyway with the top down. And here begins my long story…
The drive was exhilarating, yet calming at the same time; the wind blowing in my
face, the exhaust note in my ear, and looks and comments from the chicks. Okay
I’m buying one!
When Bullet (my son) saw the car for the first time he commented, “Papa how will
you go anywhere in this car? It’s so low, small, and it rides like it has square
wheels.” So I took him for a ride with the top down, just to Philcoa to get gas.
As the speedometer hit 80 k/ph, Bullet turned to me, “Papa this car is mine
right?” What can I say? Like father like son. With anecdotes like these in my
Miata’s history, only the right price will make me part with Black Hole (his
name) now.
Chris Guevarra did not recognize his car the next time he saw it. BH has had
modifications from the ground up en route to my automotive goal of “Miata
Perfection” conjured up by my fiendish mind. Some people may find me radical
when it comes to modifying a Miata, but I guess this is just me personality
showing through. BH has made me quite a collector too, steering wheels, wheels,
tires, parts, and memorabilia are scattered around the house as a reminder that
I am a Miata owner.
I have made countless trips with BH whether it be to Tagaytay or just to
elliptical Road to clear his throat, and every single one leaves me with a smile
that is brought about by sheer pleasure of owning and driving him. The road
traveled with BH is not at all pleasant (remember 12-14 an accident that I did
not cause). Like anything in this world it entails compromise and sacrifice, but
then, that’s the fun of owning a Miata!
I really had a hard time writing this essay, because mere words can never truly
encompass what I feel about BH.
