2006 Sports Car and Vintage Car Hill Climb Competition

November 26, 2006

Yesterday's hillclimb was a resounding success! Thanks to all who came to participate, to watch, take pictures and most of all thanks to those who volunteered their time, energy and experience in helping with the organization and implementation of yesterday's event.

39 sports, vintage, and modern cars participated in yesterday's hillclimb. The new King of the Hill is Bubi Camus with a time of 37.48 seconds in his black turbo Miata, followed by Lito Ignacio at 38.40 in his normally aspirated Miata race car, followed by Joey Pery with a time of 38.68 using John Camus' white turbo Miata. Congratulations Bubi! I believe his 37.48 is the fastest time ever up that hill. Although not a competitor for any of the classes because of not being a sports nor a vintage car, quite interesting was the performance of a Subaru Imprezza STI of Joby Tanseco, that was driven by Manny Cabili up the hill in 39+ seconds. In the drive home at around 8pm last night on a dark 2 lane blacktop road, Carlo and I were travelling at around 100kph and this car blew by us like we were standing still.

The organization of yesterday's hillclimb would not have been possible without the invaluable effort of our new lady member Ting Pascual who was tireless in seeking sponsors and making sure that we'd have everything that we would need for the event, all the way down to the pens that would be used at the registration tables.

The implementation of the activity would not have been possible without the invaluable experience and efforts of Ramon Villacorta, his son Paulo and CarShack's Chief Mechanic Joe. Our timers Carlo Ablaza, Martin Pison and Ricci Jimenez who were at the finish line the entire day working and recording times. Edrich Santos and Bless Buan who were launching the cars at the starting line for the entire morning session. Ting Pascual and Sophie de los Santos who were the ones attending to the registration of entries and posting times on the time board. Nomer Tigue and Collins Yap who put up the banners and relieved Ting and Sophie at the registration table and time board for the afternoon session. Santy Lomotan and Chito Santiago for lending phones for the communication between the starting line and the finish line. Joey Almeda for lending us VHF radios and arranging for the rental of the tents and chairs used at the registration area and the finish line. Norman Castillo for lending us banner stands. Bubi Camus for trucking all the equipment needed for the hillclimb from Manila to Subic. The Miata Camera Club for photographically documenting the event. Dale Dominado for arranging with SBMA for the closing of Aparri Road and security throughout the day as well as being our doctor on standby. Jeric Mariano for taking my place as the day's alaskador since I had more serious functions to perform. Chito Frondoso for helping me put order in the event throughout the day. And most of all, Hernan Mapua for his enduring patience in voluntarily acting as Chief Marshall and putting order at the entrance of the road during the half-hour morning pre-session before any of our other members had arrived from breakfast to perform the said function.

The event, however, was not without incident. During the afternoon session in which non-sports cars were allowed to do timed runs up the hill, a BMW miscalculated the last turn and damaged his car on the metal retaining wall at the side of the hill. Its driver was unhurt.

A great time was had by all yesterday and we look forward to more events with the same kind of dedication and participation from our members.
